OVERVIEW:

Via ferrata, literally the Italian for Iron Path, consists in moving across a rock face using insitu equipment permitting scaling the face in safety.

The equipment is permanent and depending on the via ferrate involves the use of ladders, steps (in iron or cut into the rock), wooden bridges, rope bridges and aerial bridges secured by cables allowing continual progression along the cliff face.

By respecting a few safety procedures via ferrate can allow you to reach places you would never have thought possible. Each via ferrate has its own itinerary, some easier than others; more or less physically demanding, some more exposed than others . . . the choice is yours!

THE VIA FERRATA OF AGNIELLE:

This is the perfect introductory via ferrata, comprising a simple traverse not too far from the ground with only two slightly exposed sections. The itinerary leaves the rock in two places to take a path that passes through some small caves. It ends by a foot- loose abseil…

This via-ferrate is ideal for children from the age of 10 onwards; adults with little experience in such terrain; or simply those wishing for a day out as a family.

Time:  2hr – 2.5hr.

THE VIA FERRATA OF THE DEVOLUY:

The particularity of this via-ferrate is that it is situated either side of a canyon. While remaining horizontal, the path meanders at different heights (sometimes climbing up and at other times going down) and winds its way from one side of the canyon to the other using rope bridges, aerial footpaths and tree trunks.

More technical and athletic than the via-ferrate of Agnielle, it is ideal for all public and for sporty children from aged 12 upwards.

Time:  3hr – 3.5 hr.

THE VIA FERRATA DU ROCHER DES "NEUF HEURES" IN DIGNE LES BAINS:

New since the summer 2009, this via ferrata is original in its “city aspect”. The access is from the centre of the town from where you join a little track in the forest, which, as you climb, gradually reveals a view of the town and the Bleone valley.

This initiatory via ferrata encounters short technical yet fun sections, making a good prelude to more difficult via ferrata, such as the Grande Fistoire (see below).

THE VIA FERRATA OF THE MOTTE DU CAIRE:

The largest and most renowned in the region for its athlete and exposed character; with its varied terrain and multitude of obstacles, (aerial bridges, rope brides, vertical rungs, tyrolean…), this via ferrate could be likened to an adventure park, created in a cliff face 250 m high! It is suited to children from 14 years onwards and for all sporty adults who like thrills! Circuits of differing difficulties and lengths possible.

Time: 3hr – 4.5 hr. depending on the itinerary chosen.

An additional 40 min is needed for the approach walk and to return to the parking at the end of the via ferrata.
